The American fugitive... Edward Snowden has received one of Sweden′s highest honors... after exposing the extent of government surveillance in the U.S. and its reach across the world.
Paul, tell us more about this international award?
Well, it′s often referred to as the alternative Nobel Prize.
The Right Livelihood Honorary Award, which typically honors grass-roots activists, was established in 1980 to support those offering answers to the most urgent challenges in modern society.
The former CIA and National Security Agency contractor accepted the award during a ceremony at the Swedish Parliament on Monday.
Speaking via video-link from Russia, Snowden said he had no regrets about his actions.
"All the prices we′ve paid, all the sacrifices we made, I believe we would do again... // ...this is about our rights, this is about what kind of societies that we want to live in, the kind of government that we want to have, the kind of world that we want to make for the next generation."
During his speech, Snowden also called on the United Nations to propose new measures to protect public privacy.
Other laureates included Asma Jahangir for promoting human rights in Pakistan and Bill McKibben from the U.S. for his work on climate change. Chery.
