President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland and regaining control of the Panama Canal at a press conference on January 7.

Trump cited their importance for US economic security and declined to rule out the use of military or economic coercion to secure these territories.

He also proposed imposing tariffs on Denmark if it resists the US offer to purchase Greenland.

Greenlandic member of the Danish Parliament, Aaja Chemnitz, rejected the idea, emphasising the territory's autonomy and stating, "Greenland is not for sale."
