MaximsNewsNetwork: 10 August 2009 - United Nations - UNTV: This year's International Day of the World's Indigenous People focuses on HIV/ AIDS, especially among indigenous women, who are particularly vulnerable to the threat of the virus, suffering disproportionately from a number of socio-economic difficulties that increase the spread of the disease, including poverty, homelessness and poor access to education.
In commemoration of the International Day of the Worlds Indigenous People, which focuses this year on indigenous peoples and HIV/AIDS, Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro led an observance at UN Headquarters today (10 August).
Migiro read a message to mark the Day commemorated officially on 9 August from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, emphasizing the vulnerability of indigenous peoples to HIV/AIDS, and noted that it is essential that indigenous peoples have access to the information and infrastructure necessary for detection, treatment and protection.
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which was adopted in 2007, underscores the right of indigenous peoples to all social and health services, and to the enjoyment of the highest standards of physical and mental health.
Tonya Gonnella Frichner, speaking for the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) said that indigenous peoples are already disadvantaged and subject to stigmatization and observed that suggesting high levels of HIV infection can increase the stigma indigenous peoples experience
The International Day of the Worlds Indigenous People was established in recognition of the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982.
At the event in New York, remarks by senior UN officials and indigenous representatives were followed by a performance of Crimean Tatar singing and dancing.
