In this episode, I try to do due diligence and define what I mean by the word "awakening." Be warned: my attempts are a bit messy.
"Awakening" is a verb, a something-happening that is easier to describe with story and metaphor and by naming what it is NOT. It is often experienced as something that we find ourselves inflicted with vs. something that we choose. There's often a relationship between awakening and a spiritual path, but one doesn't automatically lead to the other.
Some of the other themes covered:
-- The awakening process is one of relinquishment -- a type of subtraction process;
-- Awakening implies a dream state that is awakened from; this is at the core of any non-dual spiritual path such as A Course in Miracles, Advaita Vedanta, and Buddhism.)
-- Everyone has their own path -- as A Course in Miracles says, there can never be a universal path, but there is a Universal Experience.
-- A spiritual path is best likened to a strategy (thank you, Adyashanti) for undoing the ego (another loaded word, but think of ego as the energy of separation), and not a moral prescription in a hierarchy of behavior.
-- An inconvenient (to put it mildly!) dismantling often takes place, and we can wonder if we are sane.
-- When we eventually surrender, it is like we become open to a new channel. Now a Divine Intervention is welcome, and we may find new sources of Help that appear, such as teachers, teachings, books that resonate. They resonate now.
There are other things mentioned, too -- staying practical when it's "all an illusion", the trouble with semantics, the lie that all words (especially these) held too tightly tell, etc.
Clear as mud, right?
