I have wanted to record this song since the 11th grade which was...8 years ago now for me haha. I discovered the song when I was researching the late Martin Smith, an incredibly popular and immensely talented West End performer who passed away in 1994. He was in a show called "A Swell Party - A Celebration of Cole Porter", which featured a long list of Cole Porter's many wonderful songs.
Amongst other things, Martin Smith sang this song in the show which has a bit of an interesting story. The lyrics were written by Cole Porter, but he never set them to music. They were set to music years later, around 1991, by Ann Hampton Callaway. As a result she is the only person to have ever "collaborated" with Cole Porter on a song!
It is a simply gorgeous ballad, and has been one of my absolute favorite ballads of all time since first hearing it. I've wanted to record it for years, and was finally able to make a make-shift backing track for it using the cast recording.
