We are familiar with the idea of museums and galleries full of objects – art works. Often our perception and our memory turn to the art works themselves, but the physical space of the museum or gallery provides a crucial context that art works into relation with one another. Arranging these relations is part of the curators’ work in designing and producing the ‘hang’. But what about the spatial and contextual arrangement of art in the digital world? Digital re-hanging now seems simple, so can non-linearity and rearrangement become the norm? Our panel brings together a diverse set of speakers with very different perspectives on creating, curating, contextualising and deploying art works. The current closure of physical gallery spaces means that our panel’s focus on digital engagement with experiences of art is a particularly pressing topic.
Darcy Gerbarg is a digital artist from NYC with extensive experience of immersive and inhabitable art spaces. Helen Chatterjee is Professor of Biosciences and Arts and Sciences at University College London. She has directed several projects to bring heritage objects to new audiences and communities. Kadine James is a development and creative lead in digital research and curation, working at Verizon Media’s Ryot Studio. Brendan Ciecko works at Cuseum on the digital audience experience and engagement.
