In a shocking display of insensitivity, Karnataka ministers have mocked farmer suicides. Minister Shivanand Patil said that farmer suicides have increased in the state after the government hiked the compensation from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased.
Even Deputy CM DK Shivakumar made insensitive remarks, saying that people who commit suicide for their own reasons "cannot be called farmers".
