The Australian Gimpie Gimpie plant has the most painful stingers in the world. Some describe it as being burned by hot acid and electrocuted at the same time. It is also known as the suicide plant, and for good reason. With extremely fine needles that are stinging hairs, just a simple swipe of your skin over a leaf will embed toxins into your skin, whose painful effects can last for up to two years.
There is a story of an incident during World War 2 training exercises, when an officer was walking an Australian bush track in Queensland. On the trail he had to stop to go to the bathroom as nature called. During this bathroom break, he unknowingly reached out and used a large broad leaf of a Gimpy Gimpy plant as toilet paper.
So intense was the agony of the pain in the most sensitive of areas, the officer was driven to madness and ended up drawing his firearm and shooting himself in the head. Such was the story that has been told.
