Acronyms are a big part of the Construction Vocabulary...

Can you guess which is the MOST USED?

NO - It is not CO.....Even though some Owners/Clients out there might not agree with me.

It is RFI - Request for Information!

Asking a question to receive clarification on a scope of work because either:

1. The information is missing from key contractual documents
2. The information that has been provided needs additional details.
3. The contractor would like to ask to do it a different way then what has been shown.

There are other reasons for a RFI.....like......

establishing that the architect doesn't know what they are doing,
building a case for litigation,
tracking and documenting delays and problems on the project.

Eventually, an RFI can become the beginning of a chain of information used to establish extra cost or time on a project, a substitution request, a credit, or something as simple as a color change.

RFI's are a valuable tool, and if used properly can assist in the documentation of changes on a project to be recorded in the Final Asbuilts turned over to the Owner/Client.
