As mayor, Lurie says he will build 1500 homeless shelter beds "all over the city". He'll declare a state of emergency to do it. In 2020, he said was NOT a fan of shelter, and he was for harm reduction, housing first and injection sites. Lurie's Tipping Point spent $22M on these very same policies and homeless+addictions skyrocketed by 25%!! Now he wants to fix the problems he helped create by forcing neighborhoods to put homeless shelters in their backyard, without stopping the drug tourism, open air drug dealing, drug addictions, nor crimes related to drug addictions. SOMA & TL neighborhoods were destroyed by injection sites. He says these homeless shelters will be clean and safe. These are the same failed policies that Mayor Breed tried which exacerbated the drug tourism and fentanyl crisis in SF. When homeless addicts were housed with seniors in supportive housing, assaults and crimes on seniors spiked. Now Lurie wants to bring these same issues to every neighborhood. Lurie is NOT a moderate, he's a progressive.
