The Dornier Do X, the largest, heaviest and most powerful flying boat in the world at that time, was designed as a trans-atlantic passenger aircraft. Although it was equipped with twelve radial engines, each of them boasting nine cylinders, its performance on the planned long-distance flights was not particularly convincing. The Do X achieved a cruise speed of 175 km/h (105 mph) at an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,300 ft). However, the plane required 14 minutes to reach this speed and altitude. These limitations combined with the large number of required refueling stops meant this impressive aircraft was not commercially viable.
Nevertheless, Dornier created a landmark in aircraft construction. Many later developments profited from the experience gained in the production and usage of the Do X. After a landing mishap which broke the tail section it waited a number of years for repair. It was decied not to repair it but the largest ever flying boat ended up becoming the centerpiece at the new aviation museum in Berlin, where it remained until being destroyed in an Allied air-raid during World War II.
Schuco has produced a highly detailed zinc diecast model of the Dornier Do X in 1:72 scale. All twelve engines are accurately detailed in their wing-mounted push-pull configured pods, complete with spinning propellers. The ailerons and tail surfaces faithfully replicate the real aircraft's complex aerodynamically assisted "park-bench" control surfaces. An eye-catching display stand, modelled on one of the engine pods, cradles the model securely. But this model begs to be picked up and held to be fully appreciated. Weighing in at around 5 or 6 kilograms, this is one of the heaviest aircraft models ever made in this scale.
