A common cause of focal epilepsy, especially in the paediatric age group, is a focal cortical dysplasia. These lesion are intrinsically epileptogenic and detection is important, because identification of a lesion improves surgical outcome. Focal cortical dysplasias are a slightly heterogenous group, with different pathogenesis, imaging findings and histology in FCD type I and FCD type II.
