Dylann Roof (main) was found guilty in the deaths of nine black parishioners who died on June 17, 2015, at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, when he opened fire on their bible study group. Roof, 22, (pictured entering the church, inset, and left on June 18 after his arrest, hoped the slayings would spark a race war and had penned an angry manifesto about his hatred of African-Americans beforehand. He never denied their killings but wants to avoid the death penalty. He must now beg for his life at sentencing hearings. The jury took just X to deliver its verdict on 33 charges on Thursday afternoon after a week-long trial. Prosecutors used their closing arguments to tell of Roof’s ‘vast hatred’ of black people who they said he viewed like ‘animals’. His attorney attempted to paint him as a brainwashed, suicidal loner who took all his murderous ideas from the internet. His victims are (top to bottom, L-R) DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Myrah Thompson, Ethel Lance, Susie Jackson, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Daniel Simmons, Clementa Pinckney and Cynthia Hurd.
