Is a magnetic oil drain plug worth it? Magnet-tipped oil drain plugs, are they as good as you think? The first thought that comes to mind is that engine wear is metal and using a magnet to attract it is brilliant, but there is more to it than that. Magnets attract ferrous metals, and not everything in the engine is a ferrous metal.
When this review video came out, there was nothing out there about magnetic oil drain plug pros and cons, so this quick tip video seemed like a good idea. They are good to have, but won't capture all the metal that ends up in the oil, and are definitely not a replacement for a good oil filter. If you are looking to buy a high-end one like a Greddy or Mishimoto magnetic oil drain plug, there isn't much more they do beyond an inexpensive version.
If you're looking to perform a damaged oil drain plug replacement and installing an upgrade, a magnetic drain plug is a good way to go, and an upgrade that Steve has made on multiple cars.
