CEO of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, Tia Oros Peters, was Miley’s first guest today. The Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples is a non-profit organization fighting for indigenous communities all around the world. Tia explained how the organization began in the 1960s and 1970s after elders and leaders from indigenous communities realized that they wanted to create their own dream, instead of the standard American dream. Tia emphasized how important it is to continue to hold on to our dreams even during this time of crisis. She also stressed how inspired she is by the grassroots organizations she works with, as they immediately took action at the start of the pandemic by organizing food drives for the elderly and learning how to make hand sanitizer. Tia concluded by saying the best way to support indigenous people during this time is to contribute through monetary donations through their Website, Facebook or Instagram!
Miley’s second guest was Shirley Raines, Founder of Beauty 2 the Streets – a non-profit serving those on Skid Row and the back streets of Los Angeles, CA. Since starting the organization three years ago, Raines stressed how these folks have become her family. Right now they do not have the resources they need to navigate this pandemic – her team has passed out necessary items and educated the homeless on COVID-19 and how to best protect themselves through this epidemic. If you’d like to get involved or donate, please visit their website.
Lastly, Erin Casey & Heather Carmichael of My Friend’s Place joined Miley to discuss the amazing ways they are helping the young people of Los Angeles during this crisis. Having worked with Miley for over 5 years through The Happy Hippie Foundation, Erin and Heather have been helping youth experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles to overcome their hardships on a daily basis. Staying open as an essential business, Heather explained how My Friend’s Place has seen a spike in the amount of people coming in for help over the last few weeks for basic needs like clothing, food, hygiene supplies and support services. They also touched on how difficult it is to be distanced from one another when My Friend’s Place is usually a place of such strong connection and embrace. Miley described how much she cherishes her time working with Erin & Heather as well as the young people of My Friend’s Place, and how she truly considers them to be her heroes. Erin & Heather explained that the best way to get involved is to donate to their Amazon Wish List to send a pair of socks, underwear or other basic hygiene necessities. You can also get involved by supporting their COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.
