More than 40 illegal miners have been arrested so far as police clamp down on illegal mining operations on the West Rand. One miner was critically injured in a shoot-out with police. The operations were led by Police Minister Bheki Cele, Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela, and the Hawks.
The raids come after the gang rape of eight women in West Village, Krugersdorp, on Thursday. The women, who were part of a production crew shooting a music video, were attacked by a gang of men, believed to be illegal miners.
