RABBIT HOLE by David Lindsay-Abaire
WINNER 2007 PULITZER PRIZE FOR DRAMA
Sydney premiere
Director Sandra Bates
Designer Graham Maclean
Lighting Designer Martin Kinnane
With Lorraine Bayly, Mark Kilmurry, Georgie Parker, Jonathan Prescott and Queenie van de Zandt
A painstakingly beautiful examination of grief, loss and blame within an ordinary family.
Becca and Howie Corbett (Georgie Parker and Mark Kilmurry) have it all until a shattering personal tragedy turns their lives upside down. As the couple come to terms with their loss, Howie is ready to move on but Becca refuses to accept reality. Becca's mother Nat (Lorraine Bayly) has her own demons to deal with while her wayward sister, Izzy (Queenie van de Zandt) has some earth shattering news of her own. Together they must struggle to face some daunting questions. How do you cope with the unthinkable? How do you start to live again? And how do you face the young man (Jonathan Prescott) on the doorstep desperate for atonement? Infused with wry humour this family drama is at turns heart-wrenching and surprisingly funny.
David Lindsay-Abaire was advised as a student to write about the thing that most frightened him and after becoming a father began writing about a couple who lose their only child in a tragic accident. The play is not about finding an answer but learning how to live without one.
Rabbit Hole was awarded the 2007 Pulizter Prize for Drama after none of the nominated finalists achieved a majority vote, with the Board then electing to award the prize to a work that was not previously nominated.
"The sad, sweet release of RABBIT HOLE lies precisely in the access it allows to the pain of others... A beautifully observed new play." New York Times
"... an intensely emotional examination of grief, laced with wit, insightfulness, compassion and searing honesty." Variety
