"Well the story behind this collection is one of those extraordinary tales. The works all belonged to Ambroise Vollard, the legendary Parisian art dealer and in 1939 he died shortly before the outbreak of the war. And a few months later the works somehow ended up in the hands of a young Yugoslav called Erich Slomovic who Vollard had met during the last few months of his life. When war broke out in Paris, Slomovic had to flee and he deposited this group of around 140, 150 works in a safe in the Socit Gnrale. He fled Paris, he fell under the Nazis, died in 1942 and the collection remained undiscovered and unknown for some 40 years."
