The Union Chain Bridge, also known as the Union Bridge, is a historic suspension bridge that spans the River Tweed, linking Horncliffe in Northumberland, England, and Fishwick in Berwickshire, Scotland. It was opened to the public in 1820, during the Industrial Revolution, and at the time, it was the longest wrought iron suspension bridge in the world, with a span of 449 feet (137 m). Captain Samuel Brown, a Scottish civil engineer and inventor, designed the bridge, which was the first vehicular bridge of its kind to be built in the United Kingdom.
The Union Chain Bridge was constructed to provide a crucial transportation link between England and Scotland. Prior to its construction, travelers had to cross the river using ferries or by fording the river at low tide, a hazardous undertaking, especially during stormy weather.
Today, the Union Chain Bridge is recognized as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, and is listed as a Category A building in Scotland and a Grade I building in England. It is also the oldest suspension bridge in the world still carrying road traffic.
In March 2017, the Scottish Borders Council and Northumberland County Council agreed to contribute £550,000 each towards a restoration project for the Union Chain Bridge. Further pledges were made by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, bringing the total funding to £10.5 million.
The restoration work began in October 2020 and involved replacing the bridge's chains, hangers, and decking. The work was carried out by a team of specialists who used traditional techniques and materials to ensure the bridge's historic integrity was preserved. The restoration also included a new visitor center, which provides visitors with information about the history and significance of the bridge.
After several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and adverse weather conditions, the restoration was completed in August 2022. The bridge was reopened on April 17, 2023, with an official ceremony attended by local officials, engineers, and members of the public.
