Creating a miniaturized hardware department in my shop has been very rewarding. Rarely do I ever need a screw as I have everything I need to conquer nearly all projects. But if you’re starting a shop, the last thing you want to waste your money on is storage containers. On my storage rack I can store more than 70 different types of screws and fasteners in a variety of sizes. The screw containers I used were old baby formula jars. To buy similar storage containers made for screws, you’re looking at $3 dollars a pop. In my setup up, that would be over two hundred dollars…and that’s not including shelving to store them.
But I found a really cheap method. For about 3 bucks you can buy a 12 pack of 8oz water bottles for about the same cost as a single hardware storage container. With less than 20 dollars I could buy enough bottles to replace my entire screw organizer…and because they’re water bottles, you don’t have to worry about making sure you got all the yogurt off the bottom…they’re clean! If you’re interested in this method, I created free plans with a step by step video on my website to make a cheap 1x4 rack to store a dozen of them. This includes a free PDF that you can use to label each of your new storage containers.
