Idaho is home to numerous hidden gems throughout this geographically diverse state. After a full day exploring lava tubes, historic museums, and a brief riverside stop at Black Magic Canyon we continued north en route to Sun Valley - America’s first destination ski resort established in 1936. In this installment of Gem State Getaways we finally arrive in the quaint mountainside town of Ketchum. As you may remember from November of 2023, I visited this vibrant community during my solo adventure through the state. Upon arriving I was incredibly impressed with the lively downtown atmosphere, and longed to return ever since.

“It was the silver and lead mining boom during the late 1800's that brought settlers to the Wood River Valley. David Ketchum, a trapper and guide in the area, had his name selected by residents as the official name of the town which served as the supply base for the upper Wood River mines. When the price of silver fell after 1890, Ketchum survived as a livestock center for farmers and sheep ranchers.”

I chose to return to Kentwood Lodge by Best Western within the heart of downtown Ketchum, due to its close proximity to restaurants, shopping and outdoor recreation. The staff at this lodge is top-notch and even remembered who I was after all of these months. The property features an indoor pool/hot tub as well as the most delicious hot chocolate and cappuccino machine. Breakfast is not included with your stay, but an affordable option known as Wrap City is just a few feet away from the lodge - offering quesadillas, breakfast burritos and classic combos at affordable prices. This small town makes guests feel like they are home featuring numerous cultural events/festivals throughout the year.
