The story of a baby girl left abandoned near an apartment complex dumpster Wednesday afternoon turned out to be a hoax.

Police say a 17-year-old mother made up the story which tied up officer resources for hours. One tenant is extremely upset after finding out the woman who told her she found an abandoned baby was actually the mother of that child.

Emotions ran high as police responded to a 9-1-1 call of an abandoned baby at the Rosemont Apartments near Nevada and Garden of the Gods.

Initial reports indicated a newborn girl was left by a dumpster. At the time, folks living there didn't know what to think.

Police spent hours interviewing witnesses and looking for answers.

It didn't take long before police discovered the woman who claimed to have rescued the child was actually the mother.

"I felt fooled finding out the girl that came to me with the baby was the mom," resident Lauren Miller said. "I was angry."

Trying to comprehend why the 17-year-old teen went to great lengths to cover up a pregnancy is something she will never understand.

"There are two churches around here and a hospital right down the street," Miller said. "She didn't have to keep the baby and she didn't have to make up a story about finding it in the dumpster."

Charges against the mother are currently being discussed with the district attorney
