With Christmas in the air, some people may be wondering whether Jesus has any meaning for Muslims. In fact, Jesus (on whom be peace) figures very prominently in the Quran and Islamic tradition. He was a prophet and messenger of God. His miraculous birth in the Quran mirrors the Biblical story. He performed many miracles, including healing the blind, curing the leper and bringing the dead back to life. Even among messengers, he was distinguished further in the Quran as a person of strong determination. The Quran mentions him 25 times and everything that is said about him is positive. He is described as close to God. He is called the Word of God and the Spirit of God, all of which show God gives special distinction to Jesus. The Quran of course does not allow for him to be God, as Muslims believe there is only one God who does not associate with partners or have sons or daughters. Dr. Shabir Ally says Muslims and Christians can agree that the world is much better off for the fact that Jesus was born into this world with a message which he proclaimed to people and which Muslims continue to follow to this day indirectly through the message repeated to us in the life and teachings of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
