Kubu Island (M)adventures.
We woke up in the morning after all night rain. We decided to go to Kubu Island in Botswana (or as far as we could get due to the road conditions). We drove to village Mmatshumo where Kubu Island office is located. At the office we were told that the roads are very wet, but doable if you were adventurous and not afraid of water. There were some tourists at the office whose friends - two vehicles - were stuck in the pans. They were three vehicles together and the third vehicle drove all the way back to the office to get a rescue. We decided to keep going towards Kubu Island and see how far we could go. At the beginning the road was sandy tracks with mud. We met another vehicle coming towards us and they told us that the roads were very bad. We continued few kilometers until the road turned into a lake - the Tshane pan was full of water. On top of that rain started to fall. We waited a bit and the local lads with a bakkie arrived and we decided to join them. So we followed the bakkie through the pan, full of water, and even stronger rain started to pour, we had to stop, because we couldn’t see even a meter in front of us. We waited about 10 minutes for the rain to subside. Then we carried on with our journey. Everywhere you looked around it was just a water, no tracks, no road, just water, water, water. We made it to the vet gate. After the vet gate, there was even more water in the pan, the bakkie nearly got stuck a few times, he had to reverse in and out. Then after slipping and sliding we eventually reached two 4x4s stuck in the pan. They went off the track and sunk. They have been there for 24 hours. We started lifting one vehicle with high lift jack, the bakkie brought a lot of rocks to put under the tyres. At first the spare tyre had to be removed as the vehicle was stuck until the diff. It was clay and mud all over the place. So it was digging, hi-lift jacking, pushing and trying to drive it out. After four unsuccessful attempts and getting stuck deeper we decided to winch them out. So they jacked the car up, put more rocks underneath and we started winching them out. Finally one vehicle was out. The other car was hi-lift jacked, put rocks underneath and winched out as well. Now we had to make our way back through the pans. On the way back bakkie got stuck a couple of times so did one of the vehicles, but were pulled out easily and we all made it back to the Mmatshumo village safely. The way back was long 37 kilometers through the pans. The tourists left for Maun which was 4 hour drive in the dark.
We decided to camp at the Thuutebe Lodge again, it was the closest option. That was our New Year’s Eve adventures! The beer tasted good and the showers were even better!
