In June 1997, the Public Distribution System (PDS) was relaunched as the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS), which evolved as a system of food management and distribution of food grains. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs of the Indian government is in charge of this programme.
The TPDS places a strong emphasis on implementing and identifying the poor in order to properly arrange and distribute food grains. As a result, the Government of India's Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) performs the same function as the PDS but focuses on people living in poverty.
