This abscess was a large one. It’s not uncommon for the body to fill empty spaces under the skin with fluid. I did an additional drainage cause it was getting bigger after a few weeks instead of shrinking (happens with abscesses this size sometimes). The culture came back as skin flora, which means normal bacteria that colonize on our skin, they found no foreign common bacteria that routinely cause infections. This is common as approximately 50% of abscesses are inflammatory infiltrate and not bacterial infections. This is a great case, very interesting because of the copious amounts of discharge and the scant remnants of any cyst wall. She did get this injected at another office with an anti-inflammatory. It’s possible that injection dissolved much of the cyst. We will monitor her closely to ensure complete regression and comfort. Thanks again to my patient for sharing her fascinating case!
