Baku is the capital of the independent Azerbaijan Republic, a major scientific, technical and industrial center. In terms of its antiquity, size of territory and population, Baku is one of the oldest and largest cities in the East. Baku is located in the south of the Absheron Peninsula, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, its area is 2200 sq. km, with a population of about 2 million. Baku includes 11 administrative districts, 5 urban-type settlements.
