Swansea - Final score: France 31-5 Canada
JOANNA Sainlo was ecstatic after her two tries fired France to the World University Championship Rugby Sevens crown as they dethroned Canada in Swansea.
Sainlo and Lenaig Corson both acored in a lethal first-half display in which Erika Scott’s solo-try was all the Canadians had to show for large swathes of possession.
Roxan Bilon then put the result out of sight after the break as she finished off superb French handling work in the corner before Corson’s second try iced the French cake.
And captain Sainlo could scarcely hide her delight after wrapping up the title.
She said: “I am very, very proud of my team-mates, we played together and everybody is fantastic,” the French captain said.
“I think Canada are a great team, but more individual than we are. We are a team, a real team and that helped us to win.
“In 2012 we lost in the final, in 2014 we lost in the final against Canada and now we have won at last against Canada – it is a great feeling.”
Sainlo was a menace from the outset, busting through two tackles before the ball was recycled and she again broke the line, evading a last-ditch tap-tackle from Nakisa Levale to score a converted try under the posts.
Canada did not have to wait long for a retort, red-hot winger Erika Scott out-stripping the French wide-defence to race over, but a missed conversion meant the Canadians trailed 7-5.
Corson extended the French advantage with a break-away try, shaking off three Canadian tackles to gallop home, with Morgane Peyronnet adding the extras.
Sainlo continued her impressive match, racing around Levale again and finishing expertly in the corner to move France 19-5 ahead with two minutes left in the half.
Bilon had an easy finish in the corner just after the break after Corson’s powerful charge and sharp handling left her in acres of space metres from the try-line.
Canada continued to threaten until the final whistle, Pam Buis’ physicality asking questions that the robust French defence continued to answer.
With two minutes remaining, Corson cantered home from 40 metres to cap a memorable tournament for the French.
Stand-out Canadian Scott was philosophical in defeat, she said: “I am really proud of us, it was a tough match and a tough tournament, but I am glad we made it to the finals.
“It is not fun to lose, but I am proud of us anyway, from the beginning we have continuously improved, we came up harder in defence and attacked better.”
