안보리 긴급회의서 北미사일 규탄…새 제재결의엔 '평행선'
The UN Security Council has failed to reach an agreement on imposing fresh sanctions on North Korea for its recent missile launch.
The North's long-time ally, China opposed such measures,... saying it's time to re-engage with Pyongyang instead of punishing the regime.
Kim Hyo-sun reports. The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on North Korea's latest missile launch,... condemning the regime's behavior and discussing possible additional sanctions against the North.
The closed-door meeting on Tuesday that was requested by South Korea, the United States and Japan is known to have focused on having UN member states fully implement existing sanctions on Pyongyang.
The 15 members of the Security Council, however,... couldn't reach an agreement on imposing additional sanctions,... with China opposing such measures despite its condemnation of Pyongyang's provocations.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting,... the Chinese Ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi said dialogue is the only way to resolve the North's nuclear issue,... stressing there's "no reason" to refuse talks with the regime.
A day before the meeting,... the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said the Security Council was preparing new sanctions against the North.
Watchers say it looks like members will need more time to reach an agreement,... considering Washington and Beijing took about two months to agree on the two resolutions adopted by the Security Council last year.
