We are celebrating Earth Day by featuring some of the never-seen-before animals MBARI researchers have come across as we explore and study the ocean, Earth's largest habitat. These discoveries are beautiful reminders of how much we still don’t know about our big, mostly blue planet.
During the past three decades, MBARI has discovered more than 200 species and established itself as a leader in the discovery of deep-sea organisms. With each new encounter, MBARI provides one more piece to the puzzle of what life exists in the ocean, how these amazing organisms rely on each other to survive, and how they are being impacted by climate change.
