At Buchla, I test systems and modules. It's one of my favorite parts of my job, as it so quickly and easily turns into creativity.
In the midst of testing this Easel's outputs and inputs, I was taken with the way that this patch generated random and varied outcomes in the midst of a very basic sequence. It was due to the fact that the output of the system was being ring modulated with the modulation oscillator due to the settings. With the random settings also used, the result was interesting and relatively random timbral variations.
Despite the fact that the 208 is completely analog, it is definitely capable of some sounds we might more likely associate with FM synths, as happens in this video.
And yes, if I had been at home, I would have undoubtedly put drums to this. I have thought about doing it after the fact, but I suspect I wasn't very precise in the rhythmic voltages, which would mean a lot of work.
In any case... if you've never played a Buchla Easel, you should. Its unique architecture and beautiful sound results in things like a person being inspired even when they're just trying to test the thing.
