Always a crowd pleaser at Louisville’s Thunder Over Louisville, this year’s UPS fly by was no different. For the second year, UPS Airlines went with the “Queen of the Skies,” the Boeing 747-8F.
The -8 flew over hundreds of thousands of spectators gathered along the Ohio River to enjoy Thunder, one of the largest air show and fireworks displays in North America. UPS employees and family members from Air Region Finance and Accounting scored some prime seats at a viewing party and recognition event atop the Witherspoon parking garage, east of the Clark Memorial/Second Street Bridge, for the annual airshow and fireworks event that kicks off Louisville’s yearly Kentucky Derby Festival. The annual recognition event is part of UPS’s Thunder sponsorship, which was in its 29th consecutive year.
This was the sixth consecutive year UPS pilots flew a UPS aircraft during the air show. Captain Mike Cahalan. First Officer Hector Gelabert and Capt. Ivan Leibbrandt, made up the flight crew for the special flight Just like UPS and the -8 connect global communities, the crew showed their global connections to UPS. Cahalan hails from Alabama, Leibbrandt from South Africa and Gelabert from Puerto Rico.
“It was exciting to participate in Thunder. We hope the flight made our employees and the community proud. It’s a thrill to be a part of this experience,” Cahalan said.
