What are my Macaws up to? Probably no good...
My girls are young - actually, Kami is so young that she's still weaning. We still have to feed her about once per day -- even though she's 10 months old! Geez!
Normal Macaws - meaning non-hybrids- are said to wean at 90 days, but parrots are like humans: they are all individuals. Kailani weaned around 8 months- and we definitely catered to her need to be fed. After all, the alternative was to see if she'd starve! Not an option. When people say that parrots are "exotic" pets, they mean that they are rare, not easy to breed, and difficult! Now you have an idea about what makes them difficult...
Hybrid Macaws, like my Catalina and Harlequin, tend to take longer to wean. Maybe three times as long (and counting)! LOL
Fulfilling needs is super-important. When my parrots need extra support, like babies that are taking longer to wean or parrots that need something else -- for example, oil on their feet or a mate or a toy or a dietary change -- I do it. Promoting health is really simple: do what's needed. It's just not simple. Taking care of my parrots is a joy -- but it begins early in the morning with feeding the babies and then making fresh veggies (including orange veggies with beta carotene) for everybirdie!
