Around the world, many countries are gradually reopening their economies and lifting social-distancing measures, or considering how to do so in the near future.
Though restrictions are being relaxed in many countries, multiple world leaders have reiterated that the pandemic is far from over and warned of potential second waves.
The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 4,150,000 people and killed more than 286,000 worldwide since late January, when it was first reported. The outbreak spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan to more than 180 countries and territories—affecting every continent except Antarctica. Efforts to stamp out the pneumonia-like illness have led to entire nations enforcing lockdowns, widespread halts of international travel, mass layoffs and battered financial markets.
Almost a third of the world’s confirmed cases and about a quarter of the deaths have been in the U.S. The number of new daily cases there has remained stubbornly high, while other countries like South Korea, Italy and Germany have seen a more precipitous drop.
Mainland China and some other Asian countries are now reporting daily case totals in the single digits, after having fought the bulk of new infections prior to March. Meanwhile countries in Europe and elsewhere that saw cases surge later in the year still have a ways to go.
Much is still unknown about the virus, but a number of projections have estimated about 1% of infected patients die. That would make it 10 times more deadly than the seasonal flu, but far less deadly than SARS, MERS or Ebola.
