In this lecture we discuss the formulation for beams that are are short (L) compared to the thickness (t), that is (t/L) less than 8. We will use Timoshenko beam theory to solve the finite element problem. We demonstrate that when using 2pt Gauss quadrature for a linear element, it will exhibit shear locking and that to resolve that only two approaches are available:
(1) Reduced integration, 1 pt Gauss Quadrature Rule
(2) Consistent Interpolation, where a quadratic interpolation is used for the transverse deflection, but a linear interpolation is used for the rotation.
This is discussed also through some examples in my book.
