I have used all current Apple Watch models and today I am going to be covering everything you need to know about the Apple Watch SE, as well as taking a look at how it compares to the Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch Series 3! The Apple Watch SE starts at $279. I got the 40mm, GPS only version in Space Grey. I chose the smaller size as it fits more proportionately on my wrist. I opted for Space Grey because I find the dark colour pairs well with both casual and formal wear. The midnight silicone sport band is versatile, soft and comfortable to wear all day and even with exercising! The display is arguably the most important component of a smartwatch and is also the biggest differentiating factor between the Series 3, SE and Series 7. The Apple Watch SE features a retina display with rounded corners. This more rounded design makes the watch look and feel modern. Never does the 40mm display feel too small, apple have optimised Watch OS to the advantage of every mm and it shows! Text in messages and emails is sharp and easy to read. Colours are vibrant so images really pop and come to life. The display also gets very bright, is clear in all lighting conditions. One feature that is missing is the always-on display seen on the Apple Watch Series 7 - a feature that I personally do very much enjoy having but does come at big jump up in price. Overall this display on the Apple Watch SE is a joy to use and is a substantial step up from the smaller squared off display on the Series 3. Apple rates the battery life on the SE at 18 hours. I was glad to see that battery life is similar to the Series 7 and Series 3 - can get through a full day with around 25% remaining. How you setup notifications, background app refresh and Siri all make a big difference to the battery life. While the Apple Watch SE does not feature the faster charging seen on the Series 7 it still charges fast enough. Let’s talk about features. The Apple Watch SE has all the essential Apple Watch features. Water resistant up to 50m. Continues heart rate monitoring. No ECG or blood oxygen measuring, only on S7, does have fall detection. The SE is powered by the Dual-core S5 chip which keeps up well. The watch feels snappy, animations are smooth, apps load and refresh swiftly. Compared to the S3 it feel faster, almost as fast as the S7. All together, this creates for a strong feature set, especially for the price. How do I use the watch day to day? Receiving notifications on my Apple Watch is fantastic. Allowing me to see important notifications without having to reach for my phone. Apple provides a level of cross-device integration like no other. I can unlock my iPhone using FaceID while wearing a mask and adjust the volume of my Airpods. In London, I use Apple Pay multiple times every day. Requiring a simple tap with the wrist to pay. Maps too is great on the Apple Watch. As an objective oriented person, I find it so satisfying to complete these rings. Should you buy the Apple Watch SE? For $279 the SE is a significant upgrade to the Series 3, with it’s bigger more rounded display, more modern feature set and newer S5 chip that should still receive around 3 years of software support. While the Series 7 does come with even more features it also comes in at a significantly higher price. This is where the Apple Watch SE is the perfect middle ground. Whether you are a first time Apple Watch buyer or are looking to upgrade from an older model, the Apple Watch SE not only has the core Apple Watch features but also has that modern design with a processor that will last for years to come!
