Before determining if you or your child has immune thrombocytopenia, your doctor will make an effort to rule out any other possible causes of bleeding and a low platelet count, such as an underlying illness or medications you or your child may be taking.
Blood tests can be used to measure platelet concentrations. Adults may occasionally need a bone marrow test to rule out other problems.
Patients with mild immune thrombocytopenia might simply need periodic checks and platelet testing. Usually, children improve on their own. As ITP frequently worsens or is chronic, the majority of people with it will need therapy at some point (chronic).
There are numerous treatment options available, such as medicines to raise platelet counts or having your spleen removed (splenectomy). With your doctor, go over the benefits and drawbacks of your available treatment options.
