Russia's ministry of defence has claimed Ukraine shelled a prison in the separatist-held territory with US-made rockets on Friday, killing 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war and leaving 75 wounded.
The Sun could not immediately verify the battlefield reports. Russian Mod spokesman, Igor Konashenkov said: “The missile strike hit a pre-trial detention centre in the area of Olenivka, where Ukrainian military prisoners of war, including fighters from the Azov Regiment, are being held.”
Eight prison staff had also been injured, he added.
A separatist news outlet, Donetsk News Agency, later put the number of victims of the incident at 53.
Ukraine's armed forces have denied carrying out missile strikes on the detention facility, instead accusing Russia of trying to cover up what Kyiv calls the "torture" and "murder" of Ukrainian prisoners.
Both sides blame each other for the tragic deaths of over 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war.
