Miniseries Monday: Author James Clavell wrote a series of books known as his 'Asian saga''. His fascination with the Orient may have been triggered by the three years he spent as a POW in a brutal Japanese prison. The set-up for 'Noble House' was a bit like 'Wheels' with business dealings and intrigues (here among Japanese trading companies) interspersed with personal storylines. Even with eight hours of tv time many of the book's sub-plots had to be omitted. It was Pierce Brosnan's first project after 'Remington Steele' and boasted an impressive cast (keep an eye out for an up-and-comer). Clavell's hopes that it would lead to adaptations of 'King Rat' and 'Whirlwind' were not to be fulfilled. NBC aired 'Noble House' against ABC's 1988 Winter Olympics and the ratings did not meet expectations. Paul Chihara ('MacGruder and Loud') provided the music.
