The Polonaise (Polish: Polonez) is a stately Polish processional dance, performed by couples who walk around the dance hall; the music is in triple meter and moderate tempo and is one of the five historic national dances of Poland. A dignified ceremonial dance that from the 17th to 19th century often opened court balls and other royal functions.
When Poland went into political decline in the late 18th century, Polish musicians turned it into a symbol of nationalism. Frederic Chopin continued this tradition, employing the Polonaise for some of his grandest and most distinctive works.
The polonaise is always a first dance at a studniówka ("student dance"), the Polish equivalent of the senior prom that occurs approximately 100 days before exams.
