"Pidari" was inspired by a famous civil war in West Sumatra. The song described the different times before and during the war when the society was at peace (1st movement). The tension between advocates of Minang tradition, the Padri, and Moslem followers started to escalate (2nd movement). Then the Dutch interfered and attempted to take over. Their struggle to take over the city of Bonjol and Lintau is portrayed in the third movement of the song.

The conflict came to an end after the Dutch negotiated with Padri in an agreement known as "Pelakat Panjang."
