Thanks for watching: Zanzibar Island 4K Drone Footage Tanzania.
Zanzibar is located about 35 km east of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean south of the equator and also between Africa and Arabia. This gives the island a distinctive atmosphere and makes it such an attractive destination with its beaches and islands.
The Zanzibar archipelago consists of the main island Unguja (often called Zanzibar), the islands Pemba and Mafia and many small islets. Politically and administratively, Zanzibar belongs to Tanzania, so it is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, but it has federal autonomy.
The main island attracts the most visitors because of its wonderful beaches and the special architectural interest of Stone Town. Endless palm beaches are located mainly on the east coast of the island.
Zanzibar City
The capital of Zanzibar takes you into the past of the 17th to 19th century. The center is "Stone Town" as the oldest part of Zanzibar City. The UNESCO World Heritage Site impresses with its buildings made of building materials such as mangrove wood and coral limestone as well as with the typical "Zanzibar doors", whose wood carvings are widely known. In the winding alleys you will repeatedly encounter Swahili, Arab and Indian, but also European influences. Worth seeing are for example the Beit-el-Ajaib (Palace of Miracles) and the Beit-el-Sahel (Palace of the Sultan).
Changuu Island
Directly at a picturesque coral reef lies the "prison island" Changuu. The approximately 800 meter long island looks back on an eventful history. Once, slaves were supposed to be "kept" here before being sold at the nearby slave market in the historic old town of Zanzibar City - but this never happened. Instead, the island became a quarantine area for people who contracted yellow fever. So the nickname "prison island" is rather misleading.
Nowadays Changuu is a wonderful recreation area. Worth seeing are especially the giant tortoises, which were first settled here in the early 20th century. Birdwatchers also get their money's worth thanks to the species native to the island. About 20 minutes by boat separate you from the island, if you start from Zanzibar City.
Mnemba Island
The snorkeling and diving paradise par excellence is the approximately 1.5 kilometer long island of Mnemba. The island impresses with a soothing tranquility, a diverse vegetation with tropical flair and last but not least the coral reef "Mnemba Atoll". This colorful destination for snorkelers and divers may not be as large as the Great Barrier Reef, but it does extend around the entire island. It is also one of the most important nature reserves in East Africa. A view into the colorful underwater world is therefore possible almost everywhere. The island of Mnemba itself can be reached by a short boat ride, as it is only a few kilometers away from the main island of Zanzibar.
Nungwi Beach North
The beach is located at the northern tip of Zanzibar, is comparatively little visited and enchants with its typical "powdered sugar sand". Beach bars play reggae music and thus support the relaxed flair, which at low tide offers a view of old fishing boats.
Matemwe Beach
Pristine, quiet, dreamlike... this is Matemwe Beach with its fishing boats. Despite its remoteness in the east of the island, it can be easily reached by bus. Snorkeling tours around the Mnemba Atoll entice with the view of the colorful underwater world off the coast.
Pingwe Beach
Also in the east of the island, on the Michanwi peninsula, is the quiet beach of Pingwe Beach. Unlike Nungwi Beach North, there are no buses here, which makes the beach seem even more secluded.
Restaurant at Pingwe Beach
This is another great snorkeling spot, but the undoubted highlight is "The Rock" Restaurant, which you can reach either by foot at low tide or by water cab at high tide. It is located on a rock.
Paje Beach
Now we take you to the southeast of the island. There you will find a dream destination for kitesurfers: Paje Beach. The low waves and the constant breeze are perfect conditions for the sport, which you can learn in one of the local surf schools.
Palm trees on Paje Beach
In the evening, the beach turns into a popular beach party destination. Paje Beach is less suitable for families because of the jellyfish and sea urchins, but a walk of couples simply must be on the approximately 20 kilometers long beach at low tide!
What is the weather like in Zanzibar?
The climate in Zanzibar can be described as maritime. The months of December and January are the warmest, which is why Zanzibar is a good destination in January. The average temperatures are about 26.5 degrees Celsius. The months from March to June are particularly rainy, and there is also a shorter rainy season from September to November.
