Tweener freight, which is sometimes referred to as tweener load, is picking up buzz in the trucking industry. We’re hearing both phrases more now, including at trucking industry trade shows such as the recent TIA 2019 Capital Ideas Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida. Tweener freight certainly has the potential to be profitable for trucking companies.
But wait a minute, what exactly is tweener freight?
Tweener freight is all about distance. It’s not about the size, weight, or bulk of the load, but how far the destination. We’re talking about more than 250 miles but less than 400 miles. So, it’s a short run for an over-the-road driver. In fact, it typically sits between what a day cab can run and what an OTR driver would want to run in a day.
Since it’s such a short run, how could tweener freight be profitable for trucking companies?
Because of ELDs and load boards, such as our free Apex Capital load board, NextLOAD.com. In the age of ELDs, when hours of service are digitally monitored, you now have extensive data that could help carriers chart lanes and schedules. You can find yourself a tweener load on a load board that fits in the middle of your longer distance, overnight haul. This way, the tweener load minimizes deadheading and that makes your OTR run even more profitable.
All this talk about tweener loads hauling between bigger loads makes us think of partial loads. Some might confuse the two. Are they the same thing?
No. A partial load is all about the size and weight of the freight. Partial loads, also called Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) hauls, are usually less than 10,000 pounds. Remember that tweener loads are all about distance, not size or weight. So, while tweener loads and partial loads might both seem like in-between loads, they aren’t the same.
