A couple who reunited a toddler with its mum after searching for her for nearly five minutes have shared a video of her reaction – which has left social media users enraged.
In the short video, filmed on 6 May at a beach in Dymchurch, Kent, but shared online yesterday (7 June), Michael Currid, 32, from Canterbury can be seen holding a nappy-wearing toddler in his arms.
He had found the child atop a flight of stairs which he found her crawling on – and which led to a busy road where cars are driving past.
He is joined by his partner, Lex Hardtop, 28, a graphic designer, who is filming the incident – which went on for about five minutes in total.
At first, Michael asks a man nearby if the child is his but she is not and so the couple then proceed to scan the beach trying to find the toddler's parents.
Then he can be seen speaking with a group of beach-goers who had also spotted the child and become concerned that she was on her own.
One woman gestures down the beach towards a family, before shrugging her shoulders in confusion.
Continuing his search, Michael is suddenly approached by a woman who is on the phone – and holds out her arm for the toddler.
She doesn't acknowledge Michael, who places the unnamed child into her arms, and then absentmindedly kicks a ball.
The 32-year-old is left baffled by the exchange as the woman doesn't say a word.
"Is she joking?," Lex says off camera, as Michael runs back up the stairs.
The footage has been viewed over 1.5 million times in the last 24 hours, leaving social media users enraged.
“The way she doesn’t even thank the guy and continues on the phone, even kicks the ball,” one person said.
"Don’t have pissing kids if you can’t look after them fam!! This is sick," wrote someone else.
“Do you know how long it would've taken that baby to crawl as well?," added a third person.
“So she really just didn't care? Wasn't worried. Not grateful. Wow," wrote another person.
"Lucky the baby climbed the stairs and not into the damn sea lol," added someone else. [sic]
"I would have gone mad... she didn't even come off the phone!!!!!," commented a sixth person.
Others heaped praise on Michael, adding: “Thank god for that guy finding the baby."
“Nope going straight to authorities as parents weren't screaming or looking...they are extremely lucky. These guys are angels," added someone else.
“Michael and I were walking down the side of the beach when we noticed a baby crawling up some steps," Lex told Jam Press.
“We were hesitant at first, then confused.
"The baby crawled up the second flight of concrete steps that lead from the beach to a busy road.
“We walked past three to four different groups of people – one group either side of the stairs down to the beach and another two on the beach, around 20 people in total.
"The baby must have crawled a long way and was either ignored or not noticed by anybody.
“From noticing the baby to returning her to her mother was all-around five minutes.
“We believe it was a girl. The baby said 'mum' upon seeing their mother turn round from a distance.
"The mother said nothing as Michael gave her back.
“We were shocked by what happened, and wanted to share it with our friends and family.
"We didn't expect it to blow up as much as it has.”
The couple added that the event left them feeling emotional.
