Lake Malawi ranks highly as some of my most memorable underwater experiences. As you can see in this video, the lake holds a MASSIVE diversity of these small vibrant fish, called Cichlids. They’ve diverged into over 850 species here, almost half of which are yet to be described.
It’s interesting that there are so many since there are not really any geographical barriers to separate them, as was the case with Darwin’s Galápagos finches.
Regardless of how they came to be, it’s a magical feeling to dive into these azure waters and float through the clouds of kaleidoscope colours.
