These One Rupee coins featuring William IV were released in 1835 under East India Company (British India). The coins are graded by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) with NGC grading scale is About Uncirculated condition with remarks as Obverse Scratched and cleaned. Both these coins are struck at Calcutta Mint.
William IV, was the third son of George III and Sophia. William succeeded his brother, George IV.On the 28th of June 1830 the death of King George IV placed him on the throne. He ascended the thrones of Great Britain, Ireland, and Hanover as King William IV on 26 June 1830, and was crowned on 8 September 1831.
In 1833 the Assay Master of the Calcutta Mint, James Prinsep, prepared and submitted to the Governor General in Council, Lord William Cavendish Bentinck who retired in March 1835, a project for reforming the weights and measures of the coins of British India. This was adopted in November 1833. The Governor General Sir Charles Metcalf passed the Act XVII on August 17, 1835.
The coin is made of Silver weighing 11.66 grams with diameter 30.5 mm and reeded edge.
The obverse side of the coin has the bust of King William facing right lettering "William IIII, King". The reverse side has the denomination value as "One Rupee" within wreath in English and Urdu (Yek Rupiya), outside wreath English legend & date below. The Calcutta mint has the initials "RS" or "F" incuse on the truncation of the bust of William IV at the obverse.
