"The euphoria for the Arab spring has disappeared in Tunisia. [...] There is a high sense of insecurity, [...] also due to the tendency for sensationalism and lack of professionalism of Tunisian media."
Dr. Moncef Kartas, project coordinator Small Arms Survey, talks about the legacy of the Arab spring in Tunisia. Both regional conflicts in Syria and Libya as well as domestic issues such as high unemployment and perceived insecurity have dampened Tunisians' spirits following the Jasmine Revolution.
But Dr. Kartas also asserts that in the course of the revolution, "Tunisians found their voice and [...] this is something no one will be able to take away from them".
The interview was conducted on January 22, 2015. Dr Kartas visited the Netherlands to partake in a panel on 'Guns and Borders: Libya's Arms Bazaar Fueling Conflicts in the Arab World' as part of the Henriette van Lynden lecture series organized by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
