There’s a spot ready and waiting when Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine, reaches the end of the line. It’s 90 feet deep and 1.7 miles away from where the tunneling machine started. The end point, near Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, is more than five stories tall but barely visible above ground. That’s why a drone’s-eye view best captures the spot where Bertha’s journey ends.
