John Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset Iowa, and started his acting career in the late 1920s. Over the years, he became known for his distinctive voice, rugged good looks, and memorable performances in films such as "Stagecoach," "True Grit," and "The Searchers." However, despite his fame and success, Wayne faced health challenges toward the end of his life. In 1964, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer, which required him to undergo surgery to remove his entire stomach and lymph nodes. Wayne made a remarkable recovery and returned to work, but his battle with cancer was not yet over. In 1978, cancer returned, and this time it was too advanced for treatment. Wayne continued to work as much as he could, but his health deteriorated rapidly.
After his passing, John Wayne's funeral was held on June 15, 1979, at the Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach California. It was a private affair attended by close friends and family members, including fellow actors such as Charlton Heston and James Stewart.
Wayne's family was concerned that his grave might turn into a site of excessive fan and tourist attention, and possibly even protests from left-wing activists. As a result, for 20 years, the Hollywood icon's burial site in Newport Beach, California, remained unmarked.
It wasn't until 1999 that a simple bronze plaque was finally added to the gravesite.
The grave is marked with a simple headstone inscribed with his name, birth, and death dates, and the quote, "Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday."
