Here you can hear Pertile, one of Toscanini's favorite tenors singing through his entire range on an [a] vowel. Interestingly, he sings in that same pattern of a pure and open [a] vowel upto the C4 whereupon he immediately rounds the vowel out into an [o] or [ao] and finally from F# and up he covers the sound completely to produce a deep and dark OO or [u].
He was a very principled and cultivated singer with a flawless technique and has left behind numerous recordings as proof. He retired in '46 and taught at the Milan conservatoire until his death in '52.
